Update for Steering Shaft Disengagement

Why is this voluntary Lexus Safety Recall taking place?
Snap rings that secure the steering shaft in Lexus LX 470 vehicles from the 2003 to 2007 model years can break loose if the front wheels experience a significantly substantial impact. Over time, this can cause the steering shaft to disengage if the steering wheel is repeatedly turned to the left and right locked positions. No accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of this problem.

2007 Lexus LX 470How is Lexus responding to this issue?
Lexus has issued a voluntary safety recall for LX 470 SUVs from the 2003 to 2007 model years. Replacement snap rings with a more durable design will be installed free of charge at your Lexus dealer. An additional component will also be installed to strengthen to steering shaft attachment. All Lexus LX 470 SUVs from the 2008 model year on have a different steering shaft design that prevents this problem.

How many Lexus LX 470 SUVs are affected?
Approximately 39,000 LX 470 models made during the 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 model years are included in this recall. All LX 470 models from these years will be recalled, but no other Lexus models from these years are affected.

Is it safe to drive my Lexus while waiting for repairs?
No accidents or injuries have been reported to Lexus as a result of this problem. Unless the vehicle has suffered a significant impact to the front wheels, there may be no mechanical issues. This recall has been issued to ensure that every aspect of the LX 470 meets the highest possible safety standards. When can I get my Lexus fixed?
Recall notices will be mailed to owners in early August. You can schedule service anytime after August 1.

How long will the repairs take?
The average service time is 3 1/2 hours. Greater Boston Lexus owners can choose to have free pick-up and drop-off for their LX 470 models on the service date, or bring their vehicles to the dealership and take our complimentary shuttle service back to a home or office.

Is the repair covered by warranty? Will there be any cost to owners?
There is no charge for the snap ring replacement or the installation of an additional component to secure the steering shaft. Lexus of Watertown will provide a free shuttle to your home or office or arrange free pick up and drop off for your LX 470.

Please note that if you have previously paid for service related to steering shaft disengagement, you may be eligible for a full rebate. You will receive information on filing a rebate claim along with your recall notice.
